The New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, and the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association all call it home. From 1997 until 2017, the New York Liberty also called it home. The Garden debuted on February 11, 1968, and is the oldest significant athletic venue in the New York metropolitan region. It was formerly known as Madison Square Garden Center. It is the second-oldest NHL arena as well as the NBA's oldest venue. In terms of ticket sales as of 2016, MSG is also the second-busiest music venue worldwide. It was one of the ten most costly stadiums ever built, including two significant modifications. It is a component of the Pennsylvania Plaza office and shopping complex, which bears the name of the railroad hub. Its name is shared by a number of different operational organizations connected to the Garden.
