The Legendary Madison Square Garden
An entire history may be found at Madison
Square Garden. Located in New York City, Madison Square Garden is a
multi-use indoor arena also referred to as The Garden or by its initials MSG.
In Midtown Manhattan, above Pennsylvania Station, it is situated between
Seventh and Eighth Avenues from 31st to 33rd Street. It is the fourth location
to hold the name "Madison Square Garden." The previous two (1879 and
1890) were situated on Madison Square, at East 26th Street and Madison Avenue,
while the third Madison Square Garden (1925) was farther uptown, at Eighth
Avenue and 50th Street. In addition to professional ice hockey and basketball,
the Garden also hosts boxing, mixed martial arts, concerts, ice shows,
circuses, pro wrestling, and other sports and entertainment events. It is close
to other famous sites in midtown Manhattan, such as Koreatown, Macy's in Herald
Square, and the Empire State Building. The New York Knicks of the National
Basketball Association (NBA), the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League,
and the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association all
call it home. From 1997 until 2017, the New York Liberty also called it home.
The Garden debuted on February 11, 1968, and is the oldest significant athletic
venue in the New York metropolitan region. It was formerly known as Madison
Square Garden Center. It is the second-oldest NHL arena as well as the NBA's
oldest venue. In terms of ticket sales as of 2016, MSG is also the
second-busiest music venue worldwide. It was one of the ten most costly
stadiums ever built, including two significant modifications. It is a component
of the Pennsylvania Plaza office and shopping complex, which bears the name of
the railroad hub. Its name is shared by a number of different operational organizations
connected to the Garden.
